Potential Investment Projects

Ø  Given the size and isolation of the province of Batanes, potential investment projects are seen in vital areas, such as seaports, airports, roads and bridges, water systems, and power generation.

 

 

Ø  There is an urgent need to construct an all weather-ship shelter port in Basco because the province is within the international shipping lane.  With the appropriate development, Batanes can be a viable and valuable transshipment hub that provides safe harbor for cargo and passenger vessels, as well as maritime security. 

 

Ø  The Basco and Itbayat airports needs improvements and upgrade.  Huge investments are also needed to be tapped for an airstrip in Sabtang, to serve tourist arrivals.

 

Ø  The water systems in Basco, Sabtang and Itbayat require improvement and rehabilitation.  Aside from these, drainage system needs to be developed and constructed in Batan island.

 

Ø  In terms of strengthening power generation in the province, investments are welcome in the development of renewable energy sources, such as a mini-hydro power plant in Batan island.  There is also a plan to set up a hybrid wind/solar powerplant in the province.
